Scientists have successfully modified the gene on green alga’s photosynthesis, to generate low-cost

  Abstract: recently scientists has taken a critic breakthrough on green alga’s photosynthesis, to generate low-cost hydrogen. Plant’s photosynthesis divided into two steps which includes photo reaction and carbon reaction. Photo reaction utilizes sunshine’s energy to decompose the HOH to hydrogen and oxygen; carbon reaction utilizes the hydrogen which acquire from last step and carbon dioxide to generate glucose and water.


  Hydrogen is indispensable product, the production is over 60 million tons yearly over the world, whereas, 95% of hydrogen produced by reproducing of the steam from fossil fuel, meanwhile, it will release vast of carbon dioxide during the whole process. This approach is truly hard to make the hydrogen applied into hydrogen-powered car industry because of cost and environment contamination.

  In addition, plant has two photosynthesis system include photo system I (PSI) and photo system II (PSII) which can realize it by different pigments-protein compound respectively. PSI’s absorption peak wavelength is 700nm, PSII’s absorption peak wavelength is 680nm.


  Chalmydomonas reinhardtii is a single-celled green alga, its diameter approximately 10μm, and it has a kind of hydrogenase which can acquire electron from ferredoxin, and deliver the electron from PSI to various destination, but the problem is, hydrogenase will lost activity rapidly due to the constant oxygen which generated from PSII.

  Scientists have got a breakthrough on redesigning PSI, they create gene chimera combined by PSI and hydrogenase, make them generated in chlamydomonas and keep its activity. This new composition can make electron directing to proton and can away from carbon dioxide (carbon reaction).

  Modified chlamydomonas (PSI-hydrogenase) can generate hydrogen in high speed, and lasting couple of days.

  If this approach can substitute the current production mode for producing hydrogen, it will save fossil fuel vastly, and meanwhile, reduce the release of carbon dioxide effectively.
